REFLECTION

Experience
Over the course of 14 weeks, I have learnt quite a lot about typography. I have done type expressions, type formatting, made my own font, and even made a telegram greeting sticker! Everything has been very fulfilling, but of course not without a lot of work and feedback. The first month was quite exciting as I got to explore and learn a lot in class and on my own. But it was also when we got the most criticism as we were still pretty new to typography. As the weeks went on, the work was still fun but I was slowly spiraling into a creative block. It was quite prominent during Task 3B as I was not really satisfied with my work either. I was pretty demotivated and that was a pretty bad timing as it was the final few weeks before the end of the semester. Eitherway, I still had to keep going and continue progressing because I wanted to do well in this class. In the end, I've made it. I'm gonna go into a 1 month hibernation now thanks.

Observations
I've seen many struggle throughout the whole class, and many who excel. I realized that everybody goes through their own journey and it's better to compare with yourself rather than comparing with others as learning journeys are to each their own. Besides that, this module made us learn multiple softwares that we had to familiarize ourselves with, including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and FontLab too. We were guided just enough to make it through the tasks, but we also had a lot of room to explore the different tools and functions of the softwares by ourselves. I also realized that we actually did not have that many tasks but instead, we spent more time on each task to explore and refine them.

Findings
A lot of things happened during class. I realized that typography was not as straightforward as I thought, as if just typing words to just serve as information on a design. Of course, we had to learn the basics of it so we do not commit design 'crimes' like too much tracking, margins that are too small and terrible ragging (which I did). Putting those aside, typography conveyed expression. Be it through the way you arrange the letters, manipulate it, or distort it, words can give different meanings. That's the beauty of typography. I've never thought how text can be expressed in different ways but this module (and the lecturer) has opened my mind to think creatively and see text in a new light. Looking back, I definitely could have done better and be more committed to my work but I am glad I'm here now. Thanks Mr Vinod!
