TASK 2A - KEY ARTWORK

PROGRESS AND IDEA EXPLORATION

Week 7

I love monoline designs. From the start, I already knew it would be monoline-based because I just love the monoline style. From my personality, I would say I identify as a round sans-serif typeface, I just don't match the fancy, elegant vibe of serifs.

Throughout the week, I was sketching logos whenever I thought of an idea. Initially, there were 10 sketches but in the end, I narrowed them down to these 6 because I felt the rest did not seem to sit right with me.

Figure 3.1 Six idea sketches.

After feedback, Mr Vinod prompted that I go with the number 4 since it at least includes some personality and background to it. So the main explanation was that the 'ini' is meant to look like a face when you're nervous and also resemble the :3 derpy face. I get nervous very often (my voice is literally shaky whenever I have to present stuff in class) so I think it represents me quite well, especially the fact that I have social anxiety skajdhfakhs. You could also say I'm quite derpy and very meme-able (not the cool kid but I don't care) so the :3 face does represent me. Even when I asked my peers which one represents me the most, they all said 4 which was very surprising to me because I did not expect it.

Week 8

Figure 3.3 Six variation drafts.

Figure 3.4 Extra variations.

I actually created a ton of variations, throwing some out and keeping some.

This is all because one of my friends say that the T's started to look like middle fingers to him. Then another friend proceeded to say that the dots of the I's and the wiggle looked like two people touching? Imagination is wild.

Anyway, I started to make the T's look like fingers/hands. The top right looks like it's holding up a sword, and the center-left looks like it's holding plates. The center-right is doing the finger guns, bottom left is just holding plates really high, but someone said it looked like those balancing-plates-on-the-chopsticks act. The bottom right, aka the last one, was an attempt to create angry eyebrows to make a mischievous face.

For all of the variations, one goal I had in mind was to try different ways to make the logo as squarish as possible so there's not much counter-space as Mr. Vinod explained during the tutorial session. HoWeVEr, Mr. Vinod ended up asking me to go with the center-left, which was the most rectangular one (rip efforts) :'D. He did say it was sleeker which I do agree with. His only comment was to try to make the Y fit into the cap line and baseline to make it even sleeker.

Figure 3.5 Sleek variations.

Even when making the Y fit into the cap line and baseline, I created another ton of variations because I could not decide. After going through a few, I shortlisted the following four:

Figure 3.6 Four final selections.

I ended up going with 4 because...

Variations:
1) Ok this was my initial choice but the end felt too empty?
2) The Y sticks out of the baseline.
3) The diagonal line just throws me off even tho it felt the least cramped.
4) Well, it was the best of.. all worlds.

It seems like 4 was the obvious choice from the start but it was actually developed from 2. I felt like it was visually too cramped at the end which was the reason I left the Y sticking out. However, Kwai Pin's genius idea to shorten the tail just solved the entire problem. Kudos to Kwai Pin for that idea :D So this was the final logo:

Figure 3.7 Final logo aka Key Artwork.

Once I was done with the static logo, I moved on the animating it. My general idea was to make the face change expressions while keeping it short. So the plan was to make it smile, frown, then return to the original wiggle mouth. Was hoping to add a blink but I figured it was best to keep it simple. Since the wiggle was quite a complex path compared to a straight line, it looked a bit odd when changing expression and it was;t as smooth as I thought. I wanted the transitions of the expressions to look like a worm just wiggling to change shape. Due to my lack of expertise in After Effects, I settled with this:

Figure 3.8 Animation draft.

To be honest, the transition grew on me as it was quite unique so I kept it in the end. Since I didn't want a plain background, I went on to plan my Instagram layout first. The layout wasn't solid yet but I decided to use a patterned background for it. So here's the final animation:

TASK 2B - COLLATERAL

PROGRESS AND IDEA EXPLORATION

Week 9

For my collaterals, I wanted to keep them simple while still emitting the derpy squiggle energy. Hence, I tried to make elements by extracting parts of the key artwork. This was the fun part as I got to experiment with the different shapes to create new silhouettes.

Playing Cards

The reason I chose playing cards is that well, I like playing cards, especially the ones with intricate designs from brands like Theory11, Ellusionist, and especially Stockholm17.

I am, however, incapable of accomplishing something of that level in such a short time frame. On top of that, I was planning for my branding to go towards a flat illustration style with strokes, so it would be made out of outlines. I did decide to keep the duotone colour palette style. Hence, I played around with the different parts of the key artwork to create silhouettes of the card suits. Below is my initial design for the suits, card design, and tuck box.

Enamel Pin

Why enamel pins? Because I collect them and you can see them on my school bag.
Why do I collect them? Because the designs are cute and/or relatable. So why not make my own? Can't get more relatable than that. There wasn't much to change for the enamel pin design because I wanted it to just be the logo as it is. Since I didn't have a backing card design in mind yet, I just reused the card back design as a standalone design first.

Socks

If you were to notice what socks I wear to classes, you would realize that all my socks are either patterned or bright coloured, or both. I have a sock collection with 72 pairs and growing and I probably have more socks than all my articles of clothing combined. The initial design reminded me of Pewdiepie's iconic wave pattern because of the red and black pattern.

Sweater

I just like things with embroidery so I found a mockup of it on a sweater.

Redesigns

I was exploring other designs throughout the week.

FEEDBACK

Week 8: General feedback: N/A due to ILW. Did not upload progress. Specific feedback: N/A due to ILW. Did not upload progress.
Week 7: General feedback: All looks fine, just some variations. Specific feedback: Can go with either top left, or the middle left. Try to work with the middle left because it's sleeker. Try to integrate the Y into the area between the baseline and cap line of the T.

Week 6: General feedback: Try to reduce the counter space and create symbolism. Specific feedback: 1 and 2 have no meaning. 5 and 6 also do not have much representation. Go with number 4 since it shows the personality.

REFLECTION

Experience
I actually had a ton of fun with this assignment because 1) I get to brand myself, and 2) I get to create mockups, which I really enjoy and have been doing since high school to make a bunch of silly stuff. I already knew how Photoshop mockups work since I was familiar with it, but the sock mockup included some 3D mesh thing which was new to me. However, it did not affect me in any way since all the work is done for me. Animating in After Effects was not too bad as well, though it did take a while for my memory of how to use the software to kick in.

Doing the design for the mockups was my favourite part of it because it's the closest thing I get to see my actual product(?) coming to life. At first, the designs in Week 9 looked kinda whack because my creative juices had been sucked dry. Week 10 had a breakthrough which resulted in the final designs for the enamel pins and playing cards, which I was very happy and satisfied with. Overall, this might be my favourite assignment in the course so far, maybe second to IVN's Assignment 2 Minimalist Poster.

Observations
I observed that many classmates were doing similar layouts so I decided to change it up. The reason my key artwork is repeated three times is because of my name, 3 in 1. I also observed that a lot of classmates did not put as much effort into the mockups. I starting to think mine might have been overkill, but I hope it is worth it.

Findings
I found out that there is a lot going on when it comes to branding, from the initial concept of the brand to key artwork to collateral. So much comes into play with shapes and colours.

Figure 7.1 Graphic Digits by Victon Workshop

This is the same book I mentioned in my Typography Task 2B that I purchased secondhanded from someone. Although this assignment does not have much to do with numbers, there were a lot of branding projects as examples that I found interesting as to how they applied their key artwork onto collateral, like Project No.8's rebranding.
