LECTURES
WEEK 1 - LECTURE 1 - TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS
Axial: All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis.
Radial: All elements are extended from a point of focus.
Dilatational: All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
Random: Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.
Grid: A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
Transitional: An informal system of layered banding.
Modular: A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as standardized units.
Bilateral: All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.
WEEK 2 - LECTURE 2 - TYPOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION
Environmental Grid: Exploration is done based on editing or a few structures combined, then information is organized around the super-structure.
WEEK 3 - LECTURE 3 - CONTEXT AND CREATIVITY
Handwriting:
contributes to the first mechanically produced letterforms
Local movements and individuals:
Ek Type and Indian Type Foundry contributed to the development of vernacular typefaces in India
Huruf, a local group of graphic Deesginig digitizing and revitalizing typefaces in Malaysia
WEEK 4 - LECTURE 4 - DESIGNING TYPE
Process of Designing Type:
1) Research
2) Sketching
3) Digitization
4) Testing
5) Deploy
WEEK 5 - LECTURE 5 - PERCEPTION AND ORGANIZATION
1) Contrast
2) Form
3) Organization

Week 3
I just made some minor changes based on the feedback. Unfortunately, there was no brain juice left for the transitional system.

EXERCISE 2 - TYPE & PLAY - PART 1
PROGRESS AND IDEA EXPLORATION
Week 3
While we were in the X-space while waiting for class, I looked at Kabir's hair and just thought: "Hmm, I could form alphabets based on your hair." The man thought it was impossible, but why not give it a go?
Week 4
Since my letters were already settled, I just needed to find an appropriate photo to put my text on top of it. So I went on Pexels and tried to find hair-related images. Eventually, I settled for this image as it is not too literal.

EXERCISE 2 - TYPE & PLAY - PART 2
PROGRESS AND IDEA EXPLORATION
Week 5
For this exercise, we were supposed to submit this for the Honor Talents Competition which had the theme of either Cultural Prosperity/Celebration or Renewal of Life/Return. I was playing around with a lot of photos because I was unsure which one I thought would be suitable for the theme of the competition.
Figure 5.1 First attempt.
I wanted to make it look like it was chalk writing on the wood but I could not get the look I wanted. It also didn't seem to look resemble renewal so I went back to photo-hunting in my gallery.
Figure 5.5 Third attempt.
Initially, I followed a Youtube tutorial on how to make text look metallic, but it didn't look right as the metal looked like it was beveling towards the inside and didn't seem to fit in with the tracks. So I had to play around and tweak the settings until I got the look I wanted.

Figure 5.7 After editing the text.
Now, it was mostly done, just that I had to resize it so it follows the competition requirements of 6000px x 3000px. After some minor adjustments to the placement of the text, lighting, and photoshopping some leaves away, this was the final outcome.

FEEDBACK
Week 6:General feedback:Looks good.Specific feedback:The overexposed sky might be a concern, but the type is good to go.
Week 5:General feedback:Try harder.Specific feedback:Looks ok if I want a passing grade.
Week 4:General feedback:All good.Specific feedback:Good job. Well done.
Week 3:
General Feedback:
Interesting reference, the letters are good.
Specific feedback:
V,S and G are good.
E is okay.
The curl for the D could be moved inside so there's no extra counterspace.
Week 2:
General feedback:
Most are fine but could be better.
Specific feedback:
Axial and Radial are the best ones out of the 8.
Grid and Modular are fine.
Dilational: Bottom part could be more interesting.
Random: Not random enough, there's still some order.
Transitional: Not creative at all.
Bilateral: Left one is better.

REFLECTION
ExperienceI felt that Advanced Typo seems to be more fun as we have more freedom to explore what we wanna do for our assignments. The typographic systems exercise weren't as fun to me because it was easy to fulfill the criteria to categorize it as the layout type, but it wouldn't look nice unless you explore more and refine them. For the Type and Play exercise, however, it was more fun for me as I got to make Kabir's hair into a font for fun and for the assignment. Part 2 was fun as well as I also got to explore the Photoshop functions to try to make the type look more realistic to merge with the photo.
T-1 day to e-blog submission, I looked at other students' eblogs and everything and I just said, "I can do better." Hence, I just redid (or more like add-on) most of the Typographic Systems I did. It was a 2am grind but I think at least I feel more satisfied than I was before. I mean this is my portfolio and people are gonna look at this as a representation of the quality of my work, so I have to at least do better.
ObservationsWhile looking for inspiration for the typographic system's exercise, I realized how much work was put into making these layouts, especially random. Ironically, random takes up the most time because you have to plan the chaos to make it look like it was just like that. For Ex2 Part 2, I also realized how difficult it was to experiment and explore the functions when trying to make text look like they're part of the image.
FindingsI found out that I prefer making type rather than doing layouts. I also found out that I am a chronic procrastinator who is fortunate at times to get away with doing work in class and getting it approved on the spot. I need to change.
