LECTURES

What is visual analysis?
Visual analysis is understanding visual elements and principles, understanding the content or meaning of a design, developing the skill of critically interpreting an image, and helping people develop thinking skills.

There are 3 phases of visual analysis: Observation, Analysis, Interpretation

Final Project: Inequality

VISUAL ANALYSIS

Fig 1.1 By Francesco Bongiorni on Behance.

Artist: Francesco Bongiorni Title: The System
Year created: 2021
Medium: Digital Illustration
Size: -
Platform: https://francescobongiorni.com/project/illustration-book-cover-penguin-random-house-the-system-robert-reich/ Illustrated cover for the book “The System”, written by the best-selling author of Saving Capitalism and The Common Good, Robert B. Reich. The system is an urgent analysis of how the “rigged” systems of American politics and power operate, how this status quo came to be, and how average citizens can enact change. (Bongiorni, 2020)

Observation
The artwork is in portrait form and there is a noticeable red diagonal line across the artwork. There are people queueing up to form an ‘S' shape leading to a door. There is a person walking on the red line towards the door, cutting the queue, which leads to the top right of the composition. The person walking on the red line has a cane and a top hat. There is a person standing at the door, gesturing to go inside.
Analysis
The red line creates contrast and emphasis by using colour and by using a diagonal line against a curvy line which is created by the people queueing. The artwork also has asymmetrical balance by using the same elements on both sides but one side is shorter. There is also repetition created by the people queuing. Variety is also created by giving the people in the queue different clothes and hairstyles. The composition also follows the rule of thirds as the person on the red carpet is positioned on the grid of thirds. The silhouette of the people is also created using Gestalt law, specifically closure. The law of continuity is also present as the end of the queue supposedly leads outside the composition on the left side. Movement is also present as it leads our eye from the end of the queue to the door. The artwork also shows unity and harmony as it has the minimalistic look throughout the whole piece.
Interpretation
The diagonal red line represents a red carpet, which is usually reserved for the rich and people with power. This shows an obvious difference in privilege between the guy on the carpet and the long queue of people. Since it is made as a book cover for The System by Robert Reich, it also effectively conveys the meaning of the book, which includes how the system of American politics is rigged. The book was published in 2021, which shows how it is still a current issue.

IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION

Week 12

After gathering Fig 1.1 to Fig 1.3, I started to think of some design concepts and sketched them.

Fig 2.1 Stairs vs Escalator (18/6/22)

Fig 2.2 Lift priority. (18/6/22)

Week 13

After seeing Fig 1.5, I was reminded of last year's controversy of an ambulance that had to give way to our PM's convoy to avoid a collision.

Fig 2.3 News reports on the incident. (18/6/22)

This leads me to steer towards the issues in Malaysia itself, reminding me of many other issues like the one below:

Fig 2.4 News article on The Star website. (18/6/22)

These show the many unfair treatments of ministers vs citizens in our country, clearly having double standards.

Week 14

Fig 2.6 Sketch 4. (23/6/22)

Fig 2.7 Testing out colours in a draft. (26/6/22)

Fig 2.8 Draft 2. (26/6/22)

In the end, Ms Jinchi said that she thinks that the initial sketch was stronger and more straightforward. So I developed the initial sketch to have colour.

FEEDBACK

Week 12

Sketch 2 is better and has a nice composition with balance and symmetry.

Week 13

Interesting concept but might be hard to pull off. Can stick with sketch 2 but develop on sketch 3 as well.

Week 14

Initial sketch 1 was still stronger and was more straight to point. Alternate sketch 1 is good exploration but can be confusing to understand and draw. Develop on the initial sktech 1.

FINAL OUTCOME

REFLECTION

This was a more interesting assignment as we had to do more research on the topic we were doing compared to the past assignments where we just created designs based on our imagination and thoughts.

END.
