LECTURES
WEEK 4 - LECTURE 4 - HARMONY & UNITY
Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit
together, e.g. by theme, aesthetic style or mood.
It involves the selection of elements that share a common
trait.
Harmony without variety becomes monotony.
Unity is the repetition of particular elements through your design,
e.g. colors, shapes or materials, to pull the look together.
It
occurs when the composition gives
a sense of oneness.
Unity and harmony
seem similar but play distinct roles in the way we experience design.
Scale
is the size of an object in relation to the other objects in a
design.
Proportion
is the size of the parts of an object in relation to other parts of
the same object, e.g. ratio.
WEEK 5 - LECTURE 5 - SYMBOL, WORD & IMAGE
Symbol is a sign, shape, or object used to represent something else.
Pictorial Symbols are image-related and simplified pictures.
Abstract Symbols can look like the objects that they represent but less
detailed.
Arbitrary Symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects they represent, so
their meanings are constructed.
Images play an important role in both print and digital, so be sure to
use suitable and relevant images.
Words have to pair well with the imagery as they deepen the meaning
of the design as choice of typeface and positioning of type
will result in visual hierarchy and balance in the design.
Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a
message.

Task 1: Exercise 3 - Harmony/Unity & Symbol/Word & Image
VISUAL RESEARCH
Harmony
Thinking of harmony reminded me of the small cards that I used to make
in high school which had multicoloured doodles. Hence, I tried to use
the same style but digitalized concept for harmony.
Fig 1.1 and Fig 1.2 Screenshots of IG Story of my doodles.
Here are some vector illustrations of plants that I used for
inspiration.
Fig 1.3 Vector illustration of plants on Freepik.
Unity
When I think of Unity, I remember Unilever's logo which is made up of many elements that come together to resemble a 'U'.
Fig 1.4 Unilever's logo.
Symbol
Symbols can come in all shapes and forms, ranging from road signs, to brand logos, and even things like coins.

Word & Image
Fig 1.7. Nike advertisement.
Looking at Nike's advertisement, the incorporation of text and image is clean and straightforward. Both text and image share equal attention to the viewer, which ties them as a whole.
IDEA EXPLORATION AND DESCRIPTION
Week 5
Harmony
Draft 1 Version 1: I tried to make my own botanical style
wallpaper inspired by the doodles in Fig1.1 and Fig 1.2. To create
harmony, I used an analogous colour scheme.
Fig 2.1 First concept for Harmony (25/4/2022)
Draft 1 Version 2: Tried a different colour scheme of Draft 1 to explore the
different atmosphere it gives. Instead of cool tones, I tried warm tones and I really like the cozy feel it gives which reminds me of autumn.
Fig 2.2 Second concept for Harmony (3/5/2022)
Unity
Draft 1: Inspired by the Unilever logo (Fig 1.4), I decided
to remake a Taylor’s version consisting of symbols representing
different courses and facilities.
Fig 2.3 First concept for Unity (25/4/2022)
Draft 2:
After looking at some inspiration, I decided to make a silhouette
of a bird using circle cutouts. To show unity, I used proximity and
similarity (of the shapes). However, I think it did not seem to
represent unity as much as I thought.

Symbol
Draft 1: Presenting the QY Coin, currency of
Opreze, a fictional country made during our foundation
assignment. As Qiao Yin was the Supreme Leader, it was no
doubt to have her face on the coin. I made this for fun to
explore arbitrary symbols.
Fig 2.5 First concept for symbol (25/4/2022)
Draft 2: Made my own logo using my initials. Self branding. Tried to
give it a funky and fun look to it to represent myself. Used
blue because I like blue and blue represents stability
and trust.
Fig 2.6 Second concept for symbol (2/5/2022)
Draft 3: A logo for a fictional coffeeshop, Hobo’s Coffee.
Known for its cheap coffee and cozy environment, it is
an attraction spot for people with the hobo aesthetic.
Inspired by my coffee lover friend who looks like a
hobo. The symbol is the logo which looks like a human
with a beanie at first glance but it also resembles a
coffee cup with a face. The hand drawn style is to
evoke a sense of friendliness and casual vibe. Orange
was the chosen accent colour as orange in colour
psychology is known to represent energy, which comes
from the coffee, and youth, which is the cafe’s main
target market.

FEEDBACK
Week 5
Harmony:
Concept 1: This is total harmony. The colour
scheme and composition are all in line with the flow. However,
explore different colour palettes and come up with
variations.
Unity:
Concept 1: Cool, but make more variations to explore. Can try to
remove the black box.
Symbol:
Concept 1: An effective symbol because it has her hair colour. Can
try to experiment more without limiting myself to a circle and maybe
incorporate her initials QY.
REFLECTION
Once again, these exercises are great and fun as they allow me to make anything as long as it represents the principle of design required. This time, I was given a chance to make a wallpaper, a coin face and even a logo for a non-existent brand. This allowed me to think differently to suit the concept and not just by what I think is nice, especially for the logo. By going along with a fake brief, I was able to create a logo that represents the cafe's personality to the consumer. Overall, I had fun doing this exercise.
END.
