LECTURES

WEEK 1 - LECTURE 1 - INTRODUCTION TO DPI

Introduction to Photoshop 1:

Mr. Fauzi started off by telling us the importance of using Adobe Photoshop as a graphic designer:
  • Express our creativity
  • Create graphic design
  • Restoration of old images
  • Integrate graphics with text artistically
  • Make use of brushes
  • Change photo colours
  • Rectify mistakes in photographs

Before Photoshop existed, people already started editing photos manually using various methods and techniques. Photo manipulation was commonly done using negatives.

Following that, Mr. Fauzi provided us 10 tips of a successful graphic designer:

  • Follow the tutorials
  • Experiment
  • Memorize keyboard shortcuts
  • Try to replicate others' work
  • Participate in design competitions
  • Subscribe to online galleries
  • Smart objects for smart designers
  • Scaling artworks and proportions
  • Use actions to personalize work
  • Organize files properly

Although there are many alternatives to Adobe Photoshop, it is still one of the most widely used photo editing software. Hence, we should familiarize ourselves with it so we can make full use of the functions.

WEEK 2 - LECTURE 2 - BASIC COMPOSITION

Composition can be based off these few points:
  • Focal point
  • Hierarchy
  • Balance
  • White space
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Golden Ratio

WEEK 3 - LECTURE 3 - LASSO TOOL, PEN TOOL & LAYERING

Introduction to Photoshop 2:

This week, we learnt about 3 Photoshop tools:

Lasso Tool allows you to draw and pinpoint specific areas of a document.
Magnetic Lasso Tool will snap to nearest anchor points.

Pen Tool is used to create a path from scratch. The fewer points, the smoother a path will be.
Can create: straight lines, U-shaped curves, simple S curves, complex S curves.

Layering allows us to add images on top of another without disrupting the original image.

PROGRESS

Task 1: Exercise 1 - Collage

Week 1

Class activity - Bezier Game

Figure 1.1 My Bezier Game Score for second try

This week, we played the Bezier Game during class to test out our pen tool skills >:D. Took a while for me to get used to the 'hold Alt to change direction' function but surprisingly I still managed to pass through so many levels without using it.

For homework, we had to make a Pinterest board and choose 3 designs and explain why we like them.

Week 2

Class activity - Physical collage

This week, we made physical collages and tried out many different layouts.

Figure 1.2 First layout for physical collage. Travel themed.

Figure 1.3 Second layout for physical collage. Myvi-themed.

Figure 1.4 Third layout for physical collage. Tried to combined travel and Myvi.

REFLECTION

This project brought back memories when I used to do art and craft in primary and secondary school which I missed a lot. It reminded me of how used we have gotten to digital softwares and the convenience they brought. But nothing beats the good old cut and paste projects with scissors and glue.
